Mayor Kevin Johnson launched an initiative Tuesday to raise funds to pay for housing for 600 homeless families.

As part of the "One Day to End Homelessness" campaign, parishioners at more than 80 houses of worship will be asked Sunday to donate one day's worth of their rent or mortgage. A telethon then will be held Monday on KCRA. Donations also can be made at www.onedaytoprevent homelessness.org.

If at least $400,000 is raised, the regional Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program will be eligible for $1.6 million in matching funds from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
